Chapter Fifteen

Dan’s team raced down Route 54, picking up Allen and Rich at Carrizozo. Five miles north of Alamogordo, Dan grabbed the microphone to the radio.

“Tully, can you hear me?”

A moment later, Tully’s voice came over the radio. “I’m here.”

“We’re about to round up the deaders. Head to White Sands and prepare the fence.”

“Roger that. Good luck.”

Tully veered his Explorer off the road into the desert. Uebel continued to the city.

“Are we going to have to go downtown to round them up?” asked Max Crumb.

“I’m hoping the last time brought most of them to the western edge of town, so all we have to do is make noise.” Uebel glanced up at his rearview mirror, focusing on Allen and Rich behind him. “If we have to hunt them down, we’re screwed.”

When the rest of the convoy reached Carrizozo, it split into four groups. Jeff’s contingent continued south for a few miles before veering into the desert to break into White Sands from the east and release the suicide deaders. The other three in the group turned west onto Route 380.

Wayne left first, turning into the desert to release their suicide deaders from the northeast. Kenny’s team broke off next, turning left onto the road leading to Stallion Gate to start the diversion. Slade and Angel continued west to where they intended to sneak onto the compound and do an end run with the warhead.

“Shit!” Max swore under his breath.

It was an understatement.

Hundreds of the living dead meandered along the road in front of them.

“At least rounding them up won’t be tough,” said Dan.

“If we can avoid being surrounded.”

“Good point.”

Dan accelerated. He would need to get past the horde before they closed in.

Avoiding the first dozen or so deaders was easy. Then, the horde grew denser, surrounding the two vehicles. Dan plowed the Toyota 4Runner through, using the weight and power of the vehicle to push his way through until they broke free on the other side. There were still dozens of deaders ahead of them but, spread out enough, they could get by.

A deader in police riot gear stepped out in front of them. Dan swerved and accelerated, catching it on his right fender. It bounced over the hood onto the roof, slid along the vehicle, and tumbled off the back.

Max turned in his seat and looked out the back. “Fuck.”

Dan glanced into the rearview mirror. Part of the horde had swarmed around the Rogue.
